And....... We're Off!!

Joel is now a rather movable baby!  This past week he's really got very good not staying in the same place where he was left!  As he's only 14 weeks he's not crawling or properly rolling yet, but he can swing his legs and shuffle his body so he can spin around on the spot, combined with side rolling to his left and right and also lift up his body by pushing on his legs to his shoulders and then sliding along that way!!

It also means that nights are a little disturbed once more as I keep waking to find him 'chatting' about the fact he's in a crumpled heap at the bottom of his cot with head and feet on a diagonal hitting the sides!

Of course, we're still on our jollydays this week so it's all taking place down in the west country and he's in travel cots so what will happen once we're home I don't know but it's quite amusing, bar the extra get ups at night!!

Holidays!!

It's tiring being on holiday!!

Looking as cute as ever!

We pootled along to St. Mawes on the boat and I had Joel attached to me all the way!!

Not too sure about the sea!  Dipped a toe in and withdrew his legs!

Keeping out of the beautiful sunshine!

Up In The Night??!!

Well, I can only assume that it was the effects of the jab which in turn made him sleep A LOT yesterday which then made him wake in the night at 3am and 5am.  Curiously, I woke up first again which makes me wonder whether it's an inate thing??

Anyhow, I wasn't sure why I was awake at 3.15 and popped to the bathroom and then realised he was awake so we had a little cuddly feed and he went back to sleep in his cot till 5.00 and had another cuddly feed and I left him snoozing on the spare bed whilst I went back to sleep till 7.40 when he had another feed and now we're up and downstairs.

Yesterday was actually a good enough day, and Joel showed no other symptoms other than the fact he slept far too much but I didn't have the heart to try and wake him.  Anyway, we were walking miles with the pram so that could have had something to do with it too!

We met Sally and Kelly from my work for lunch which he slept throughout, then we went to a baby massage class on which there will I think be a separate post!!  And as I was tired and we've not got a lot of food in due to going away for a couple of weeks tomorrow, we ordered pizzas for dinner!

So now our day is a bit out of whack, but I'm sure it'll come together again at some point!

Right, nappy time methinks!!

Baby Massage

With the summer holidays upon us, all the classes and groups we were going too (ok, Mum's and Toddlers and Bounce and Rhyme) have finished for 6 weeks!

But we signed up for baby massage a while ago and these classes are running over the summer so we'll have something to go to if only once a week!!

They are Thursday afternoon the first one was ok.  I'm not sure Joel likes being massaged.  He was wiggling away from me and it was hard to massage his limbs as he got further down his mat!!  But it was interesting to meet the other mums there.

One of the Mums I'd met before at the NHS antenatal classes which was nice!  Turns out her son Jacob was born the day before Joel and they lay on mats next to each giving beaming smiles which was lovely so I think they've made friends!!

We have to miss the next session due to being on holiday but will catch up the later weeks.  I'm hoping to make friends with the other mums too, as it'd be nice to know other 'first time mums' as I think it's quite different when you've already had other babies!!

12 Week Jabs

Joel had to go for his jabs yesterday at 12 weeks and 6 days old and I was anticipating lots of crying and a bad night, but to my surprise he didn't even whimper at the two injections at all!!  I was all ready to feed him to soothe him but it wasn't necessary!

I also took him to be weighed at baby clinic and he wasn't as heavy as we'd supposed at 13lbs 1oz and home we came.

He got a little grizzly at about 5.30pm so we dosed him with paracetamol, which he doesn't really like and spits out, and we let him skip his bath as he'd only get more upset not being in the right mood, and went straight to bed.

He was awake at 4amish so I fed him and stayed with him till morning.  We were both sleepy and after a disrupted night slept in till after 7.30!!

We've had a bit of a grizzly day, but he's still been good as gold.  He's just wanted extra cuddles and after another dose of calpol this evening and a giant but runny poop he seemed to perk up a bit and played on his mat and had a nice bath before going to bed.

He's now sleeping off the effects nicely and should hopefully be his little self tomorrow :)

Side Rolling Nappy Off Time

This afternoon he's been working out that he can roll onto his side and it's been so funny to watch!

He's been able to flail his legs to the side for a little while but today he drew his legs up and pulled his arms in and waited until he toppled!

He then went back onto his back and did it again and again as though he were practising!

He was only going left today, by the time he thought about going right I think he was tired as he's now napping in my arms as I write this via blackberry!

What a star he's been today!

Cushioned Tummy Time!

Hmmm, this seemed to help a little!

Tummy Time

Joel does not really like tummy time. He flounders around for a few minutes before getting frustrated and making cross noises and if not picked up begins to cry.
I try to lay him on his front once a day but it's not going so well! Trouble is we're told how important it is to neck strength development.
Oh well, on we go with it! :)

Bumbo

I won a Bumbo from Ebay for £16 including the tray for which I was rather chuffed.  Admittedly it's pink but who cares for that price!?  Certainly not Joel!!  He's still rather on the small side for it so I've not put him in it much, but he does seem to really enjoy seeing the world from a new perspective!

Rainy Day Blues

Having had a sucession of beautiful sunny days where we picnicked in the town park, played in the garden and enjoyed the warm days, now it's the weekend and we were planning a family picnic, of course this all got rained out!!

What to do on a rainy day in a small house?

Go out in the rain of course!  We headed out regardless, and Joel was dry and cosy in his pram and we were all sorted in our rain macs and Izzy loves going out regardless so we took a nice rainy walk which was actually quite nice!

Then on getting home Joel decided that he wants to grow and be a big boy so spent the afternoon feeding and sleeping lots and lots.  He's not fed as long since his tongue tie was done so I hope he was getting something, but if not, there'll be lots tomorrow!

Catch Up

We were down in Devon for the weekend until Monday and with Steve working a lot and using his laptop and my blackberry charger being left in Devon I've not had much chance or implements to post!

Anyhow, Joel has been a good a baby as ever!  Today he slept until 7am, then napped 9-10, then napped again 12-1pm, then napped again 3-5, had a happy bath and went to sleep about 7.30pm.  No crying today, a bit of wind bothered him after dinner but other than that he's been adorably cuddly, smiley, happy and content all day long!  Which has made for a lovely day plus the sun has been shining!  I love maternity leave.  The thought of work is very bleurgh.

Yesterday we called in at Grandma and Grandad's and Dad decided to have a go at weighing him and weighed himself, then whilst holding Joel.  He reckons he's now 14lbs but we'll find out for sure next Tuesday which is when we're going for his 12 week jabs.

Yes, you read that correctly.  Little Joel was 12 weeks old yesterday!  I can't believe it at all.  And I can't believe he's growing so big and strong on milk that I'm making for him!!  God had it all worked out didn't He!!  It's still a bit strange to me that the old boobs are doing what they're designed for, but I'm loving it all the same and it was so worth persevering through all the pain and discomfort of the initial weeks because now it's pain free and fabulous!!  Still haven't tried it myself though!

And some of his 0-3 outfits are too small now.  Not length, as dungarees legs hang out of, but round the middle!!  He's a cuddly little monkey!!

And that's all my catching up news for now.  I'm just going to pop upstairs to look at him sleeping!  Again!!

12 Weeks Old

And such a happy chappy!!

Every morning he's so pleased to see me and beams as I lift him from his cot and change his nappy!  He sleeps so well, and seems to be very content with our little routine, and the good thing is, he's so adaptable as well if needs be.

He has this very cute way of smiling, where he does a coy, bashful little look and has begun to 'coo' properly!  I was playing with him, and he began 'talking' to me, in quite a shy little voice, which I encouraged and it was a lovely moment!!  I kept repeating the 'coo' sounds and he said them back to me as well.

We've got his Jumperoo built, and although he's too small still to be able to play with it, he seems to love sitting in the sit with a cushion underneath and he does wiggle about and seems to like the fact he can wiggle himself.

He's still being exclusively breast fed and it's working very well for us.  He's totally thriving.

I love being the one who gets up every morning, and yes a lie in would be nice, but I'd also hate to be missing one second of his morning happy time!  We come downstairs, and have a chat and a gurgle, then he sits in his chair gurgling to the toys which hang on it, whilst I make a cup of tea and then he may kick on his mat, or sometimes he comes into the bathroom whilst I shower (in his chair!) and other times we may walk down the garden with Izzy and after about 1 1/2 hours he starts to yawn, rub his eyes and it's time to put him down for an hour!  Once his batteries are recharged, happy Joel is back!

We still go to a Tuesday mum's and toddlers group, and a Wednesday singing circle and Joel loves some of the action songs where fingers are wiggled, or he gets tickled.  They're all quite new to me too so I'm enjoying learning them!  Wrinkly Elephants, 5 little men in a spaceship, prickly hedgehogs and all the rest!

I'm really loving being a Mummy.

In Devon

We made it to Devon again and Joel is being a wonderful baby!  He gurgled and coo'd at his Grandparents although did have a bit of a 'shy' moment where he buried his head in my shoulder whilst smiling!  It was very cute.

He went to bed fine after his feed but did wake at 2.30am so I fed him back to sleep, and then just before 6am this morning so I've been up a while and feel pretty sleepy!!  I'll likely need a nap this afternoon I think.

But he didn't fuss, or cry at all which was good.

His Granny and Grandpa are thrilled to have him here and are taking him to church (with me) tomorrow to show him off!

Not sure what our plans today are, but I hope they involve buying a toothbrush from somewhere as I've forgotten to pack mine and Steve's!!  Oops.  Oh well, I can't be expected to think of EVERYTHING!

Grab Attack

I mentioned last week that Joel had grabbed a toy and put it in his mouth.  Well, there's a lot more grabbing going on this week so maybe it wasn't accidental!!  He's grabbing my hair a lot, my scarf today was held onto very tightly and he was waving a couple of lightweight rattles around this morning!!  He doesn't look at the toys at all, so it's not a deliberate 'I want to wave a rattle' action, but still, a lot of the items are going straight to his mouth (he seems to like licking things!!) and I guess it's all good development!

We're trying him out in more sitting positions this week, to get him ready for his bumbo.  (I won it for £16 on Ebay, including the play tray!) but as it recommends babies are 4 months before using it, I don't want to make him do things too early.  Therefore we're sitting him up in the corner of the sofa, his vibrating chair has a more 'sitting' position and we're gently playing 'Row, row row your boat' with a cushion behind him and he seems to really like it.

I'm just waiting for the day Izzy gets in his way and he grabs her tail!  She's still rather wary of him, the usurper of her affections, but she's still tolerating him for now.

He's smiling all the time now, and making lovely chuckles but no full on giggles as yet.  Being a novice mum, I still am not sure when these things all happen, but every day he seems to come on a bit more for which I'm very glad and proud!

We're heading down to Devon again this weekend to stay with the in-laws.  Joel will likely be tired out by the weekend (he still seems to be getting over last weekend!) but hopefully he'll cope with the changes ok.  Last time he was so little he didn't realise where he was, but now he'll realise he's not in his own cot or room, so I'm hoping he sleeps enough.  He's been to lots of houses and coped ok in those situations so we'll have to see.  He does seem to be going through a bit of a clingy stage, and even Steve can't soothe him sometimes so he just comes to me and calms down immediately.  And I know it's naughty but I have to say a little bit of me likes it as well!!  It's like I'm his favourite person.  But I will try to encourage him to like other people as well!

We've had a lovely day today which started off with Bounce and Rhyme at the library, a mooch around town to buy Daddy's birthday presents, lots of playing, singing and smiles, lots of naps and sleepy cuddles, long feeds and a warm bath at 6.30, with a baby shapes book to read and then bed.

Aah, bed, lovely bed!!  I'll be joining mine after his night feed at 10pm (which does keep him going through till around 6am now!!)  Hurrah!

Joel's Busy Weekend II

And there's more!.....

This weekend was also my Dad's 60th Birthday Party!

So as all our immediate family were in one place for the wedding, we had a party on the Sunday at my parent's house and the weather was again beautiful for a garden party!  We had lots of food to enjoy at lunchtime, and the twins played outside all day long and Joel was once again very good!!  These sorts of days with lots of passing around and different people and faces I guess are very good for him and he copes with it all brilliantly, but by the end of the day he just wanted some Mummy cuddles and I can't say I was complaining at all!!  I loved that my baby just wanted me and I could calm and soothe him :)

And here's some pics:

Joel's Busy Weekend!

Well, it's Monday morning and considering the busy weekend he's had, he's up early at 6am for a feed this morning!  And that's having gone to bed at 7pm with a little extra feed at 10pm so I can't complain!!   He's sleeping so well and I do think the gentle routine has helped him enormously.

Our busy weekend involved driving down to the Cotswolds for my cousin's wedding and this would be his first large family function.  I didn't put him in his new outfit for the drive, just a vest, shorts and a funky bib as it was a warm day.

We met Mum and Dad, and Sarah and her family at a country park en route for a picnic and let the dogs have a couple of hours to play and spend time outdoors before waiting in the car for us during the wedding (Dad has a system which leaves his boot open with a dog guard in the door so they have lots of fresh air!) and we got to the hotel in good time.

I swiftly dressed Joel in his dungarees, popped his hat and shoes on him (his first shoes!!) and off we went just in time to join the party as it moved from the hotel to a lovely garden opposite where the wedding was being held!  Our first outdoors wedding!

We met Nicola and Steve and Rory (his little Northern counterpart born the day before) and there was much cooing, and also Lucy, another new addition currently 4 months!  Not that it was all about the babies of course!!

Joel sat so well on Daddy's knee for the ceremony and went to sleep.  He then allowed himself to be passed around various relatives and didn't grumble and had some lovely awake time until the meal when he got a bit fractious and wouldn't feed properly so I went and sat in a quiet room with him.  Grandma then held him whilst Steve and I ate (as she had already eaten all hers!) and he went off to sleep again!

After the meal, we all gathered again in the garden and the twins raced around on bikes and running races, and we managed to get all three babies awake together at the same time for a photo!!  Then, Joel was sleepy again (it was 7pm after all) so we made a move home about 8pm after another good feed as it was a hot day and as he'd slept a bit out of place all day his feeds were a bit out so we were back to on demand which was find and worked out well.

And here's some photos:

How cute are his little shoes?!

Trying to see what's going on at the front!

Sleep was a better option for him!

The girly cousins - 3 of us on the left had babies this year!

Great Aunty Joan, the twins, Sam, Joel and Rory! Great Nephews!

More nap time, on Grandma this time over dinner!

Zzzzzzzzzz.

Waking up to chat to his cousins and Uncle Karl.

Having a giggle with Rory and Lucy.

Lucy liked him....

How cute is this?!

10 Weeks Old

Joel was 10 weeks old on Wednesday and is coming on so well.

He loves looking around and taking everything in.  He's really chomping at the bit to be able to sit up on his own and see the world from a new perspective so I won a bumbo on Ebay and although he's a little small at the moment, we're looking forward to him being able to sit up in it when he's ready.

We also splurged in the Mothercare sale and bought him a Jumperoo whilst they were on offer.  Grandma has a swing and groove, but we wanted something different to have for him here that he can sit in and play with and friends have one which their daughter loves so we went for it.  It arrived and is waiting with the Bumbo until he's old enough to go in it!

In the meantime, he still likes sitting in his vibrating chair and laying down on the play gym but he's certainly getting ready for new challenges.

I bought him a baby book called 'Faces' which is mainly black and white and he loved it!!  It's just three pages, with patterns on one side and faces of 'Daddy', 'Mummy' and 'Baby' on the other but he stared at each one for ages and the patterns on the 'Baby' page got him chuckling and laughing away!!  To see a little 10 week old baby studying the pages of a book was wonderful!!  I shall have to get Steve to take a photograph.

He's also rather fond of his Freddie Firefly and Jacques Peacock lamaze toys at the moment and is taking more of an interest in them now.  Still, nothing seems to compare with the love he has for his thumb now!  He's so proud of managing to put his hand in his mouth!!

The little man is wonderful!!
