I have been shopping and bought sweet potatoes, butternut squash, pears, carrots and parsnips. Today is the day we're going to try Joel on some solids! Whether it's baby rice or vegetables I'm not sure yet. We have baby rice as well! It's rather exciting, and Joel doesn't know anything about it yet!
Anyway, this morning I roasted the sweet potatoes and butternut squash and pureed it with my new hand blender (seperatly and in seperate bowls), and then spooned it into my freezer cube block, and I have 9 cubes of each freezing away.
I've steamed my pears and will be pureeing them next, then will probably stew the carrots and parsnips but I need the first batch of freezer cubes to be set so I can transfer them into bags and re-use the blocks.
He's going to have a couple of spoonfuls every day this week at lunch time, and then next week if this one goes ok, we'll carry on to two meals, breakfast and lunch and see how it goes.
We are using the Annabelle Karmel weaning guide as it seems really easy and comprehensive.
Roll on his awake time to try some solids! Photo's will be put on later!!

It's All Go....
We're rolling lots and lots at the moment, only from tummy to back, but the way he's swinging his legs about I shouldn't imagine back to tummy will take too much longer now! He also likes lying on his tummy on us reclining on the sofa and throwing himself off sideways, he thinks that's a good game!
His teeth are being bothersome today. We've had grizzles and tears a lot which is very unlike him. I've put Dentinox gel on his gums this evening, and gave him a teether from the fridge which didn't really impress him at all! His cheeks have a red glow about them, and I've made sure he has lots of nappy off time as I've read that teething can give issues there too but so far so good :)
His favourite games other than throwing himself off us sideways, are being an aeroplane and held under his arms and jumped up and down. He adores his jumperoo, that was one of our best purchases yet and tomorrow, we're going to try him with baby rice to see what he makes of it. It was meant to be today but Steve was out all day so that gives me a chance to read about it a bit more and start on the prepping of vegetables. We've got sweet potatoes, carrots, butternut squash, parsnips and pears to cook into purees and freeze in cubes.
Other than that sleeping seems to be very disrupted at the moment. He's been waking every two-three hours through the night for the past week, and it's taking its toll on me. He's not always hungry, some times I think it's his teeth as he just wants cuddles and then from about 5am he won't settle unless I get in the spare bed with him as he just cries and only I can soothe him. It's flattering (!) but tiring. We're hoping some solids will start to make him feel more full and keep him sleeping although we know breast milk has more calories in it than solids, but he'll stay on the breast too for as long as we can.
All this and 21 weeks old today!

Rolling Rolling Rolling
We had a roll over yesterday!! The very first genuine all by himself one! And I missed it!
I placed him on his tummy then went to get a pooh bear toy to encourage him to roll, turned back and there he was, grinning up at me from his back!!
For a moment I was temporarily confused but realised what had happened so got my phone out to record it for Steve, turned him over, pressed record and....
Nothing! He put his head down, thumb in and began to wail that he hated his tummy and I was the meanest mummy ever to put him on his tummy.
So, phone down, then cuddles and back on his tummy and he promptly stretched his arms in front of him and rolled onto his back! So I grabbed my phone, put him back on his tummy trying to film and once again, tears, crying, life is so unfair!!
So I've not managed to capture the moment as yet, and he wouldn't do it last night for Steve either so we shall practise more today!!
I think he's rather camera shy!
.... finally got it!!.....

More Dedication Pictures...
Presenting Joel.....
Today was Joel's dedication and he was the perfect host!
He smiled at everyone and didn't cry at all, was happy to be passed around, and hopefully enjoyed his day!!
The service was lovely. After a couple of songs Steve and I went up and Matt, the church leader spoke about what the dedication means, it's biblical principles and asked us to promise to teach Joel about Jesus, and bring him up a Christian, and pray for him. Of course we said 'we do'!!
He also asked the church to stand and promise to pray for him and help us which they all did.
We then sang 'Because He Lives' which I'd asked to be played as it's a lovely hymn and has the words -
'how sweet to hold, a new born baby,
and feel the pride, and joy he brings,
but greater still, the calm assurance,
this child can face uncertain days becuase He lives'.
And I got a proper lump in my throat at that! Here's a video of one of our worship singers singing it on Youtube! LINK
Joel does make me so proud, and joyful, and to know he has so many people praying for him is wonderful!
And time for some pictures:-

Waxing Lyrical
We seem to have an ear wax issue at the moment. I've noticed for a couple of weeks largish (for a baby!) chunks of dried wax coming out of Joel's ears and having checked on Babycentre this seems normal.
But this week, looking into his ear all I can see is wax and its not making its way out! He can still hear fine and we're not meant to poke at it for pushing it in further the wrong way so I guess its a case of seeing what happens and letting a Dr take a look.
Ear drops can be used to soften the wax to help it out. I doubt he'll like that though, its bad enough trying to do his nails already!
