Rugrat

Joel is now a fully mobile baby, scootling over the floor like a speedy little chap, entertaining himself brilliantly with his toys, working things out, sitting himself up, rolling and crawling and he's so funny to watch!

He seems to have good concentration and will spend lots of time on one thing, especially his shape sorter, taking time over testing each piece in each hole until it goes in, and then he cheers himself (yay!!) and claps and looks up to make sure we're all watching him and cheering and clapping too!   He's very into his fishbowl, carefully taking the fish out and putting them in again, and seeing what else fits in the bowl, and looking at us through it which he finds very entertaining1

Sometimes he doesn't quite get it in, and cheers anyway and then we'll say, 'try again, push it in' and he manages it but he seems to think just trying deserves a cheer as well, which I suppose it does really!!  The only one he struggles with now is the moon, and it does seem tricky to push through unless put in a certain way.  so it's not just him.

We went to Nottingham yesterday to visit my sister who is due a baby girl any time now really.  Her due date is early March and we're very excited to meet the new baby.  Joel will look huge next to her, although he is looking and seeming more like a little boy now rather than a baby.

Today he is wearing 12-18 month dungarees and a matching vest underneath.  I bought them from Ebay, and thought I'd see how they fit as his 9-12 bargain dungaree set from Sainsburys is very tight on his shoulders and round his middle and these seem to fit very well.  I've had to roll the legs up an inch, so I guess he's a long bodied baby like his daddy.  I shall have to see what else I've bought him for after his birthday as it may need to come out now!!

He went with Grandad to mums and toddlers this morning as I've had a day at home doing admin for Steve and he's  had a lovely time.  And hopefully Joel liked it too!!  (boom boom).  Once I'm back at work next month (boo hoo) either Mum or Dad will carry on taking him to the group as it's good for him, but I'm sad he won't be able to carry on with Bounce and Rhyme due to being at nursery on a Wednesday.

Work.  It seems a million miles away but closer than ever.  I say back next month, but it'll be on leave for four weeks and then back at the start of April.  At least I'll get a full pay check before I'm due back and I can buy some work clothes to fit.  There's no way I'll fit in my lovely skirts from yesteryear.  I can't believe I ever did fit in them to be honest.  I keep forgetting I was trim for my wedding and the lightest I can remember!  Pregnancy clouds your mind as you get used to being a whale.  Still, I wouldn't call myself a whale any more.  Just not quite as slim as before!

Our Day....

Joel and I have had a very lazy day today.

We were in our pyjamas till gone noon.

We went on a walk in the frosty sunshine with Izzy to feed the ducks and get some fresh air.

Bumbo snack time

Waving!
Big Smiles
Joel ate like a hungry munchkin today and had porridge and half a banana for breakfast, toasted crumpet, breadsticks with hummus and the other half of banana for elevenes, homemade chicken and leek soup with homemade crusty bread and blueberries, beans on toast for dinner with a satsuma.  He just kept on eating and eating!! It was lovely to see him enjoying his food!
Where's Joel?
Peeko!
There he is!!
This seemed to have the knock on effect of extra poopy nappies (5 today since 2.30am anyway!!)
We then played all afternoon with his toys.
Beans are yummy!

We finished off the day with a lovely nap until Daddy walked in to find us both  zonked out in bed catching some much needed zzzz's.  Well, I needed them more than Joel of course!

Sitting Up

Oh, did I mention Joel's new trick of this week?

He can now get himself to sitting from lying down so it's great I don't have to keep picking him up when he's stuck and he's very pleased with himself.

For a couple of weeks when he was lying down, he'd sort of push up with one hand, lie on his side and look as though he were just lounging!

But now, he can push up with one hand, and bring his other across to then raise himself just that little bit more to sit up on his own.

Just one more thing he can do himself now, and one less thing he needs me for!  :(

Joel and Izzy

Joel loves playing with Izzy.  She's still not too enamoured of him, but I still think they'll be best friends sooner rather than later!  It depends on when he'll throw her a ball to fetch!

Clever Baby

I really think babies are more clever than I've ever given them credit for.  At least I can say that's the case for Joel!  He remembers things and is enjoying seeing cause and effect.  He loves making us laugh.

In our lounge, our crazy dog has a thing about the curtain.  I'm not sure where this stems from. But if it moves or I open or close them, she comes barging in from wherever she is in the house!  If she's upstairs you hear her collar jingle and she flings herself down the stairs to run and check what's going on, or if she's in her bed in the front room you hear tch tch tch as her claws try to get a grip on the laminate flooring.

Anyway, the point to this rather mundane tale is that Joel has learnt if he's on my knee near the curtain, and he wants a bit of entertainment, all he has to do is move the curtain, make the noise of the rings on the pole, and the crazy hound will appear as if by magic.

This afternoon she dutifully came running in and up to the sofa and Joel giggled in glee at it, and as he continued to wave the curtain, she jumped about and gave such a reaction that I don't think he'll ever be able to give up the temptation to annoy the dog!

Learning His Shapes

Giving a Grin
Grandma has bought him a new toy as she thinks he's ready for it now rather than for his birthday which is when it was originally intended and he's amazed me with working it out and being able to put the circle, square and triangle into the sorter.  The star and moon are a bit more complex but it makes me  feel that I underestimate him and that he could solve a lot more challenges that maybe I need to introduce!

Nappy Fun

This is Joel trying to escape mid nappy change.

He'd already made a break for it about 7 times so this time I had to laugh and take a picture!

Do babies get carpet burn on their bits?

Grotty Snotty

Well, Joel has had a couple of rough nights due to waking with a congested nose and being a bit upset at being awake when he wants to be asleep.  He's got full on snuffles and a persistent cough and my heart goes out to him when he lies face down on the floor to cough as he's too tired to hold himself up.

Don't get me wrong, he's still his happy little self and enjoying his playing.  It's just that he's tiring more easily, off his food and just not quite 100%.

Yesterday he didn't want his lunch of homemade fish pie, but after having eaten a yoghurt he did allow some peas to be picked out of the sauce and placed in his mouth so he got a bit of nourishment there.  At tea time I made him scrambled egg on toast and he had a little fromage frais as well, then a satsuma.  I was really pleased as he managed to eat lots of it, then Steve called up to say he was on his way  home, and as I was on the phone to him and watching Joel, Joel gagged, his eyes went red and watery and blerugh, his mouth opened and out poured white, yoghurty, eggy sick.  I couldn't help it, I shrieked down the phone to Steve 'Joel's just puked, got to go' and not sure what to do went to him, and removed his plastic bib which had conveniently caught it all.

then 'bleurgh' another load came out but this time he leant over the side of his high chair and covered the floor, the radiator, himself and even got all his clean bibs which sit in the basket underneath the high chair.

He began to cry so I picked him up, but had to remove his jeans and jumper before I properly cuddled him, he smelt pretty bad, and by this time he was ok and slapping my face and pulling my lip!

He was still not much better today and we had a bit of an awful night.  He woke at 10pm with a blocked nose again, I had to wash his face with warm water to remove all the dried on snot and after having been sick with all his dinner was rather hungry.  So he ate some cheese, bread and a yoghurt, drank a lot of milk but didn't go back to sleep.  I left him grumbling in his cot for 20 minutes then went back in to find he'd pooped so couldn't sleep with that in his pants, and by the time that was sorted, he was past being tired and was now miserable.

He didn't want to sit with me, he didn't want to lie down with me, he didn't want to be put down, he didn't want to be picked up.  He didn't want to be taken downstairs to be shown Waybaloo in the vain hope he'd think it was 6pm and go to sleep, he didn't want more milk.  He just wanted to be asleep with having to get to sleep first!  I don't even know what time this was as I didn't have a clock to hand.  I only know I was shattered and so was he.

In the end he went in his cot, I lay on the spare bed next to him, we left the lamp on so he could see me, my arm was stuck through the side of his cot so he could hold my hand and know I was there if he wanted me and the next thing I knew, it was 6am.  Steve was getting up for his breakfast meeting and I collapsed back in our big bed, snuggled under the scrumptious duvet and was allowed by Joel to sleep till almost 8am.

Then I woke with a headache, a sore throat, temperature and he was still coughing so decided it was time to visit the Doctors'.  And the verdict was we have a virus - a viral pharyngitis  but no medication needed, just rest, paracetamol and ice-cream to soothe our throats.

So I've made a vat of leek and chicken soup, I have vimto to hand, Joel is napping having pulled his socks off and stuck his cold. bare feet through the bars of his cot and is managing to sleep like that!

So we're trying to have a restful day and get ourselves better for tomorrow as Joel is meant to having another induction session at nursery!  Lets see how things go...
